Fall 2008

Jordanian Women Visit
Chapel House was host to a delegation of 8 Jordanian women, several members of the Interfaith Story Circle of the Capital Region, and students from the UAlbany Muslim Student Association for a discussion on religion in America.

The visitors were invited to the US under the auspices of the Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program. Program objectives are outlined below.

ROLE OF RELIGION IN THE U.S.
A Project for Jordan
Program objectives:

The participants in this project are women graduate students in Islamic Studies at the University of Jordan. In the course of their program in the United States they will pursue the following objectives:

• Gaining an introduction to the roles that faith and religion play in American society;

• Acquiring a fuller understanding of the multiple facets of Islam in America, its great diversity which mirrors America’s overall diversity, its adaptation to a new setting, and the full engagement of Muslims in American life;

• Learning about the importance of pluralism, tolerance, and volunteerism as components in American civic life and exploring the role that faith plays in all of them; and

• Establishing ongoing links with American students to improve their understanding of Islam and to promote mutual understanding between Jordanians and Americans.

Handicapped Accessibility in Place for Fall Semester:

After several unanticipated delays, the electronic doors and swipe-card system have been installed and are operational. Doors will remain unlocked during business hours but after hours, evenings and weekends, identified staff and students may access the building by swiping their Suny ID card; no more keys!

Funds for this project were generated through our Building Bridges of Faith Campaign.
